MIU - A Brief History

The Medical Illustration Unit was established in 1962 by the UNSW Faculty of Medicine and the Prince Henry/Prince of Wales Hospital Group to provide centralised medical illustration services for the medical school.
Jointly resourced by the Faculty, Prince of Wales Group and the Sydney Children's Hospital, MIU's professional team applies photography, graphics, computer imaging and related techniques to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, medical research, publication, conferences, patient care and health promotion.
Major policy decisions on medical illustration and related matters are determined by the MIU Advisory Committee, chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
MIU was relocated in 1969 from the Prince Henry Hospital to the Prince of Wales and now receives 5,000 service requests per year, including 1,200 specialised clinical and technical photography sessions. Annually, 60,000 slides, prints and scans, 300 scientific posters and numerous items of artwork are produced to exacting deadlines.
